My one-year-old HP laptop is constantly freezing and showing (Not Responding) messages. Will not do a single thing no matter how long I wait or if I try to end the programs using Task Manager.
Is it possible there is a problem with Office 10?

Hi,
Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
If both the above tests pass, try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Part of this process will require a restart to check the drive.

Thank you very much for your response.
You have been more help to me that the Costco Concierge service and the HP Help Desk to which I was connected, combined.
I did as you suggested and all tests went through without incident. However, sadly the problem still persists.
I still suspect that it may be my Microsoft Office 2010 which may have have some glitches or instability issues??? But, it's just a guess.
Please help, once more, if you can, sir. Thank you.

Hi,
You're welcome
It may be an idea to see if this issue is being caused by One of the programs that starts with Windows.
Start the notebook and let Windows fully load. Hold down the Windows key and press R. In to the Run box type msconfig and hit enter. In the following window, click the Start up tab, remove the tick next to each start-up item and then click Apply to make the change. Restart the notebook and see if it now runs normally. If it does, re-enable one start up item ( I would suggest re-enabling your security software first ), click Apply and restart the notebook again and check if it still runs ok. If it still runs OK, enabling One more start-up item, click Apply, restart again and check. Keep on enabling start-up items one at a time in this manner until you encounter the 'Not Responding' problem and you will know the last program you set to run at start-up is causing the issue.
Let me know which Program this is.

Thanks! I will try.
There are 28 items listed there, many of the HP.
Stopping all of these items will have no detrimental effects on the start-up? I just want to make sure that I don't stop any critical functions that may make it impossible to fully start the computer at all.

Hi,
You can quite safely stop all these starting with Windows without affecting the operating system - as I mentioned previously, be sure that the first program you set to start with Windows again is your Security Software.

Was there a resolution to this issue. I only see the latest recommendation to stop the various programs from starting. I have the exact same problem. My laptop freezes multiple times per day and task manager will not open at that time. Have to either wait it out (it usually comes back after a few minutes) or shut it down with the hard button.
I have had the hard drive reformatted, and teh Geek Squad look it over. They couldnt find anything wrong.

I tried all the tests for the disks. Took several hours for them all to run. No errors and no affect on the Not Responding. I am getting a 100% frequency situation on the Resource Monitor when the computer is not responding although there is little to no cpu usage. Does anyone know what that could mean and is it related? It drops back down to zero or low numbers when the computer starts responding again.
