Here's how it worked for me using windows 7 x64, starting with the printer plugged in via USB, and recognized as HP 1012, but sorted under "unspecified" in the devices & printers list and not working.

Unzip the driver "lj1010serieshb-vista64.zip" (should be downloadable from HP if you google that filename), then:

1. Control panel / devices: "add a printer"  -> "add a local printer"  -> "use an existing port:", "USB001 (virtual printer port for USB)"
2. Update printer list by clicking "Windows Update" button
3. Select manufacturer: "HP", printers: "hp laserjet 3055 PCL5 (HP)"
4. Click "have disk..." and open the hpc1015w.inf driver file
5. Select "Hp LaserJet 1012 HB" in the "choose your printer" list that pops up
6. Type a name for this dummy printer (something other than what you want your printer to actually be called).  The print drivers are now installed, but they aren't yet associated with the printer hardware.
7. Go to the laserjet 1012 icon sorted under "unspecified" in devices (this is your actual printer, which isn't associated with working drivers yet).  Right click -> "properties" -> hardware tab -> "properties" -> driver tab -> "uninstall".  The printer should be removed from the devices list.
8. Unplug your printer's usb cable and plug it back in.
9. The printer should pop back up in the "unspecified" list, then the driver should be associated with it automatically and it will move to the "printers" list; it should now be working.

Just went through the sign up process so I could thank you.  I had my 1012 working with the 3055 driver for a while.  Then it started doing the "Unsupported Personality: PCL" nonsense.  YHour procedure worked perfectly so far.  It is back up and running.  Hopefully it will stay that way.  Thanks again.

Hey sk2play,

I just wanted to shout out to you that I just tried your fix to get my older HP LaserJet 1012 printer working on my64 bit  Windows 7 emachines PC and it worked like a charm.  The printer seems to stutter and need to think before it prints and spits out a page but I can live with that.  Thanks.

awesome...thanks your post below worked like a charm !!!  I love my 1012 printer now I get to keep it!!!

just installed Windows 7 (64bit) retail today on three on my home computers and was suprised my 1012 printer was not supported. Windows 7 saw it as a unspecified device. I was able to resolve this driver issue by having the printer attached to the USB Port, then manually pressing ADD PRINTER, choose DOT4 for the port. For the driver, choose the built in Windows 7 HP Laserjet 3055 PCL5 driver and it will worked like a charm. I also shared the printer on my home network and it worked with other Windows 7 computers not directly attached automatically. This should work for the 1010, 1012 and 1015 as they are fundamentally the same printer, just a different year they were made. The Printers section in the control panel eventually got rid of the Unspecified Device as it now see's it as a 3055 printer. I could care less what Windows 7 calls the printer. I just want it to print. Tested Print Page and Word\Excel Documents with no problems. Hope this helps!
